Fox Hunt
30” x 24” unframed, 32” x 26” framed. Oil on canvas.
Dogs have long histories of working for humans. In “Fox Hunt”, the wire fox terrier is placed in a setting that harkens back to their use in fox hunting. The fox, laying on the floor, is now a toy.
Using pattern as part of my story telling, I often show the pattern off center of the canvas and where the scale of the pattern is large enough, I do not show the full image of the pattern subject. “Fox Hunt” is a good example of this: the patterns are not centered on the canvas and the huntsmen and the brass horns (on the floor) are only shown partially. For me, showing the pattern in this manner enhances the sense that the painting is capturing a short moment in time, unlike the sitting for a formal portrait.
